ON ART

FANKAARI FOSSILS

Birla Academy of Art and Culture is situated near my house at Southern Avenue is a significant centre of major cultural activities in Kolkata. Birla Academy of Art and Culture has been venue for Avant Grade national and international Art Exhibitions.

However Fankaari Fossils was an uniquely different art exhibition. It has on display, both, installations and paintings. What caught my eyes was the riot of colours. The compositions are simple and minimalistic yet gorgeous.

On enquiry I came to know that Fankaar is an Urdu/ hindusthani term which implies 'artist'. Fossils means frozen in time. So Fankari Fossils means Timeless art.
The art exhibited draws its inspiration from both Rajasthan and West Bengal. It shows how the simultaneous interplay of various media can culminate in an enthralling art piece. Ranging from wooden installations and mixed media on paper to junk materials and cloth on canvas, the 30 artworks transport viewer to a very different world.

 There are four sections v.i.z.:-

Mythology and culture

 Rajasthan colours

Looking East

Everyday life
